Let’s get this out of the way: you don’t need a $1,200 putter to make more putts. But every so often a putter shows up that makes you want to grab a sleeve of balls and spend the afternoon on the practice green. This is one of those.
Scotty Cameron’s new Phantom OC Spec III is a limited release, and it’s all black: the head, the shaft, the grip and the finish. It looks fast just sitting there.
Pick your shape
There are two to choose from:

- Phantom 5: the compact wingback. If you like a mallet that doesn’t feel like you’re pushing a lawnmower around the green, this is the one. Tour players have loved this shape for years.
- Phantom 11R: the bigger, rounder, more stable option. If your mishits on the green drift left and right, this one helps keep them online. Lefties, this is your model; it’s the only one that comes in left-handed.
The nerdy bit, kept short

“OC” stands for Onset Center. Cameron sets the shaft back from the front of the head and lines it up with the centre of gravity. In plain English, the face wants to stay square instead of twisting open or shut on you. Titleist calls it low torque, not zero torque, and we appreciate them being straight with us about it.
“Spec III” is a car-world term for a build where every part is tuned to work together. Here that means a heavier head (Titleist says 15 grams heavier), a slightly stiffer black steel shaft so it still feels solid, chain-link face milling, and three bright sightlines on top that are easy to line up.

Our honest take
A great putter won’t fix a bad read, and it won’t fix tension in your hands over a three-footer. What it can do is give you confidence. When you love what you’re looking down at, you stand over the ball calmer, and a calmer stroke makes more putts. That’s not a gimmick, it’s just how putting works.
If you’ve been curious about the low-torque thing but couldn’t give up the classic Cameron look and feel, this is the best of both. Just get the length and lie right for you. A Scotty set up wrong for your stroke is just an expensive paperweight.
